How to Fix 80048820 Error

There are lots of people every day who need to know how to fix error 80048820, a common error that pops up in Windows Live Messenger. This is a very common error and one that most users will run into at one point or another, though few of those users have any idea what this error refers to.

You try to log in to the messenger, but it won't work. Instead, you get a pop-up window which reads:
  •     “Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”
  •     "Error code: 80048820".

The reasons for this particular error really are varied. As an example,, it's possible that the system clock on your computer system wasn't set accurately. Another reason might be if you are using IE and the proxy you have (if you work with it) is usually invalid. Maybe the firewall software has blocked your main instant messaging software. Whatever the causes are you can find specific tips you have to take in order to solve the trouble. The initial step which should be seen is the your antivirus program and the firewall software on your pc. Disable them and see if the issue is fixed. Cleaning the browser history and cookies is a second method.

If your using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, try updating or disabling your proxy (if you have permission):
  •     Press ALT+T or click on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.
  •     Select Internet Options from the menu and click the Connections tab on the dialog box.
  •     Click the Lan Settings button and uncheck the Proxy Server check box.

I suggest you reboot your computer before launching MSN Messenger after changing any proxy settings.
